Planning Without Guilt with Mallory [Episode 410]

Creating Family Culture with Laura [Episode 409]
ListenedWhat do you want your family life to actually feel like? In this episode, Jessica sits down with Laura, a mom of three, to talk about using the Thriving in Motherhood Planner to move beyond simply managing everyday life and start intentionally creating a family culture. Laura shares how she uses the planner to collect ideas for traditions, plan meaningful experiences, keep her brain from holding onto everything, and slowly work toward bigger goals—even when they take years to come together. They also talk about making space for personal goals and interests in motherhood, letting go of ideas that no longer fit, and figuring out what your family genuinely enjoys instead of trying to do everything. One of the biggest takeaways? You don't have to do every project you plan. Your vision isn't about accomplishing everything. It's about having enough clarity to know where you want to spend your time and energy. If you're in a season where you're ready to move beyond just getting through the days and start exploring…
A Live Planner Coaching Session with Lili [Episode 408]
ListenedJessica sits down with Lili for a real-life planner coaching session to look at what's working, where she's feeling stuck, and how to make the planner better support the season she's actually in. They talk about creating a simple vision, using the Big Three to understand where your time and energy are going, what to do with tasks that keep getting moved from week to week, and how identifying the next action can make an overwhelming task feel doable. They also explore how planning can help you make intentional choices without feeling guilty when your priorities change. If you've ever wondered whether you're using your planner "right," this conversation is a reminder that the goal isn't to fit your life into your planner, it's to use your planner to support your life.

September Reset and Leaning Into The Middle [Episode 404]
ListenedSeptember can feel a little like a second January. A fresh start, a new school year, and a chance to look at where you are and where you want to go. In this episode, I'm talking about how to revisit your vision for the year, get clear on what still matters to you, and make the most of the next few months. I'm also sharing something I've been learning about the middle, that long stretch after the excitement of starting has worn off but before you've reached the finish line. If your motivation has faded or you've stalled on something that once felt exciting, it doesn't necessarily mean you're on the wrong track. You might just be in the middle. Wherever you are right now, you're not behind. There is still plenty of time to make meaningful progress, have new experiences, and intentionally shape the rest of your year. Plus, I'm sharing details about our upcoming live 12-week walk-through of the Surviving to Thriving Toolkit, where we'll work together on creating systems and rhythms that support you and your…
The One Thing You Need To Create A Life You Love [Episode 403]
ListenedFor years, I thought I needed better systems to make motherhood and life work. Better cleaning routines, more organization, less clutter, better habits. And while I love a good system, looking back over 13 years of motherhood, I can see that systems weren't actually the thing that helped me move forward. What made the biggest difference was learning how to clear the mental clutter, find a home for all the ideas in my head, and get clear on what mattered to me and what my next step was. In this episode, I'm sharing how that process eventually became the Thriving in Motherhood Planner and how it has helped me continue moving forward through busy seasons, survival mode, homeschooling, building a business, family adventures, and everyday life. I'm also introducing the Action + Clarity Matrix and the four places we can find ourselves as moms: bored, busy but not fulfilled, bummed or frustrated, or aligned Plus, the 2027 Thriving in Motherhood Planner launch is coming soon! Our Favorite Homeschooling Curriculum For 2026: 7th, 5th, 3rd, and 1st Grade [Episode 402]
ListenedIn this episode, I'm sharing what homeschooling six kids looks like for us this year. I'll walk you through our daily rhythm, the curriculum we're using, what my kids are doing independently, and what we're still doing together as a family. I'm also sharing what's working really well right now, what we're still figuring out, and how our homeschool continues to change as my kids get older.
Behind the Scenes: Projects, Pausing the Podcast, and Family Life [Episode 401]
ListenedAfter more than eight years of releasing weekly episodes and recently passed the 400 mark, I wanted to sit down and share what's really been going on behind the scenes. In this episode, I talk honestly about this current season of life - adding another baby, full schedules, late nights, early mornings - and what it feels like when you've been living beyond your capacity for a long time. I share why this podcast is taking a pause, what I mean by doing a "controlled burn," and how I'm learning to stop treading water and start building the boat instead. I'll talk about margin, connection, and redefining what thriving looks like when life feels full.
Prayer for hard seasons. [Episode 400]
ListenedIn this episode, I share what I've been learning about prayer during a season that's pushed me beyond my capacity. Drawing from scripture and personal experience, I talk about bringing our weaknesses honestly to God, praying for what only He can do, and trusting that He meets us with a plan, power, and promises. If you're walking through a stretching season, I hope this episode offers encouragement, perspective, and hope.
How I talk to my kids about politics [Episode 399]
ListenedIn this episode, I share howmy thinking about politics as evolved over the last decade, and how that shapes the way I talk with my children about it. Rather than focusing on current events or party lines, I walk through the principles we return to in our home: Separating problems from people Understanding influence verses concern Valuing character and leadership And learning to solve problems without attacking one another This episode will help you consider how we can help our kids engage thoughtfully and compassionately with a complex world.
Discouraged or too overwhelmed to set goals? Try this. [Episode 398]
ListenedA few weeks into the new year, it's easy to feel discouraged, especially if the goals you set already feel heavy or out of reach. In this episode, I talk about why that happens and what I do instead. I share why traditional goal-setting can feel like using the wrong map in motherhood, how shifting to a vision changes the entire experience, and why the real work isn't about doing more, it's about who you're becoming along the way. I'll share: Why time-based goals often create pressure and self-doubt in full seasons of life How a vision gives direction without demanding speed or perfection Why regular reflection helps you make progress without carrying shame or discouragement
The Mindset Shift You Need to Homeschool For the Long Haul [Episode 397]
ListenedIf you want to homeschool long term, you have to stop letting one hard day convince you you're doing it wrong. In this episode, I share the mindset shifts (and practical systems) that have helped me homeschool consistently for 10+ years—through changing seasons, growing kids, and all the problems that inevitably come up. We'll talk about how to solve the right problem, how to build systems that work when life isn't ideal, and why your role isn't to panic—it's to become the person who can do this. Our Favorite Homeschooling Curriculum for 2026: 6th, 4th, 2nd, Kindergarten and Baby [Episode 396]
ListenedI'm homeschooling five kids (grades 6, 4, 2, kindergarten… plus a five-month-old baby), and I'm sharing what's actually working now that real life is in full swing. I'll walk through the "filter" I'm using for curriculum decisions, what changed between my plan from seven months ago and what we're doing now, and the biggest fixes we made (especially in math and writing). I also share what our days look like right now — the flow, the routines, and the small setup decisions that make consistency possible. If You Feel Behind or Discouraged In Life…Watch This [Episode 395]
ListenedAs the year comes to a close, I'm talking about what it feels like to reflect when you're discouraged, uncertain, or just tired. When progress feels slow. When goals didn't turn out the way you hoped. When the future feels unclear. In this episode, I share the thoughts, stories, and spiritual insights that helped me reframe what it means to be "behind," why nothing you've given is wasted, and how to approach vision-setting when dreaming feels hard. I'll talk about seasons of becoming, surrender, and letting God lead when you don't have clarity yet.
I read 60 books in 2025. These 4 will make you rethink weight loss goals. [Episode 394]

From surprising medical history to cultural myths we've quietly absorbed, these reads helped me question where our ideals about "healthy," "thin," and "ideal" actually come from. My Top 12 Books of 2025 (Fiction, Memoirs, Self-Help & Non-Fiction) [Episode 393]
ListenedAs the year winds down, I love slowing things down a bit, opening my 2026 Thriving in Motherhood Planner, working through the vision section, and taking time to reflect on what actually stayed with me this year. One of my favorite parts of that process is reviewing the books I read. This year, I read over 60 books. When I sat down to reflect, I narrowed that list first to the ones that truly stood out, and then distilled it even further to my top favorites across fiction, memoir, nonfiction, and a small handful of self-help books that genuinely impacted how I live day to day. In this episode, I'm sharing: The fiction series that gave me deep, genuine belly laughs at the end of long days The nonfiction and memoirs that expanded how I think about resilience, perspective, history, and human experience The self-help books that actually changed my habits, not just my ideas How I choose what to read in different seasons of life (especially as a homeschooling mom of five) These are the books that shaped how I…
Feeling Lost About Where to Focus? Do These 2 Things Before January 1st [Episode 392]
ListenedBefore you jump into holiday plans or new-year goals, there are two things I want you to do, because they will completely change how you feel heading into next year. In this episode, I walk you through the exact reflection and clarity-building process I'm using right now to close out 2025 and prepare for 2026. It's a simple reset that helps you see what really happened this year, understand where you grew, and get clear about what matters most going forward.
3 principles every mom needs to hear before 2026 [Episode 391]
ListenedIn this episode, I'm sharing three things I want you to start thinking about as we get close to the end of the yar. These things will set you up really well when you sit down to create your vision for the new year. They come from two books I read in November, and it was really encouraging to see how much of the research lined up with what we've been doing in the Thriving in Motherhood Planner and Journal since 2015. But these books also highlighted a few angles that I think can help us look at things a little differently. In this episode, I walk you through: Why moms burn out Three ways to actually complete the stress cycle How to use your part as a tool instead of something that weighs you down What makes a future vision powerful enough to influence your present Why pausing every 90 days changes everything These ideas aren't about rushing into goals or "fixing" anything. They're just little shifts that help you understand what's going on inside your days so you can move into the new year with clairty and…
Why Your Decluttering Plan Never Happens (And The Simple Priority Shift That Actually Works) [Episode 390]
ListenedSome decluttering advice sounds great, until you try it with a real house with real kids and real life happening all day long. In this episode, we're talking about the gap between having a decluttering plan and following through, especially when you're a busy mom. After years of trying a lot of different methods, I've learned what actually makes progress possible when you don't have long stretches of quiet time. If you're ready to make steady, realistic progress in your home (even with kids underfoot), I hope you'll listen in.
5 things I would tell myself mom as a first time mom after 12 years of motherhood [Episode 389]
ListenedIf I could sit my younger self down - the brand-new mom who was sleep deprived, overwhelmed, and convinced she was doing everything wrong - there are five things I would tell her. They're simple, but they have changed everything. In this episode, I'm sharing the real-life lessons that came from a decade of raising kids, navigating sleep deprivation, stumbling through routines, shifting old patterns, and learning what actually makes motherhood feel lighter. I'm sharing: What helped me manage those long nights so I didn't spiral with anxiety Why going outside changed everything when the days felt suffocating How I stopped letting one hard hour turn into a "bad day" The realization that I was making everything harder than it needed to be (and the small mindset shift that make everything easier) The truth about deculttering that I wish someone had told me years ago I don't have motherhood all figured out, but these five things genuinely made my days lighter. Hopefully one of them does the same for you.
How To Stop Being Hijacked By Everyone Else's Priorities [Episode 388]
ListenedThere's a kind of energy that looks productive on the outside but feels frantic on the inside. You're moving all day, checking things off, staying "on top of it," but when the house finally goes quiet, you don't feel satisfied—just tired. It's easy to assume the problem is time management, but often what we need most is clarity. Clarity about what matters most. Clarity about what season we're in. Clarity about where our energy is truly needed. When we lose that clarity, it's easy to get swept up in ideas, goals, and endless to-dos that don't actually align with our values. We end up busy, but not purposeful. Productive, but not peaceful. In this episode, I talk about what causes that frantic energy (especially in reentry seasons) and how to slow down enough to find your footing again. You'll hear tools for: Recognizing the difference between meaningful progress and distraction. Learning how to quiet mental clutter and renew your mind. Reconnecting with your vision, so you know what to say yes and no to.…
How to Pivot And Embrace A New Vision For Your Life with Carly Thornock [Episode 387]
ListenedThis week, I'm joined by Carly Thornock, who's joining us from a 400-year-old farmhouse in Portugal. Carly and her husband went from running a business and owning their dream home to traveling the world with their three boys—and finding more peace, health, and joy along the way. In this conversation, she shares the Shift 5, the process that helps them make decisions, pivot with purpose, and live a life that truly aligns with their values. We talk about: Creating a vision that keeps evolving Learning to trust God with the "how" Living intentionally through change and uncertainty Listen in for real stories, practical wisdom, and a reminder that it's never too late to rewrite your vision for a meaningful life.

What Thriving in Motherhood Really Looks Like [Episode 230]
ListenedI hear from moms all the time (and I've said it too!): I feel like I am surviving all the time, and I just want to thrive! If this rings remotely true to you, this week's episode is for you. We will talk about what thriving really looks like and what you can do to get from surviving to thriving sooner than you think!
How To Use The Thriving In Motherhood Planner In Every Season [Episode 385]
ListenedWhen I first created the Thriving in Motherhood Planner, I was deep in survival mode, barely keeping up and looking for something that made life feel more doable. Over the years, it's become so much more than a planner. It's a tool that grows with me. The fact is, no one stays in one place for long. We all move through seasons, sometimes thriving, sometimes surviving, and our planning needs change with them. In this week's episode, I'm walking through what it looks like to use your planner along the five-step path from surviving to thriving and how it adapts to whatever season you're in. Here's a peak inside: Surviving: When life feels heavy and unpredictable, the planner helps you focus on what's actually true, not just what your brain is telling you. Reentry: As you start to get back on your feet, I'll show you how to brain dump, sort through the chaos, and gently find your footing again. Normalizing: This is where you rebuild your rhythms. Learn how to use your weekly pages and routines to create…
Updates to the 2026 Thriving in Motherhood Planner [Episode 384]
ListenedWhen I first created the Thriving in Motherhood Planner back in 2015, it was just for me. A way to make sense of life as a busy mom. By 2018, I started sharing it with you, and every year since, it's gotten a little better. Now, the 2026 planner is almost here, and I can't wait to show you what's new! These updates came straight from real life and from the feedback of current planner users who shared what's helping them and what could make it even better. In this episode, I'm sharing: The new vision page for your kids that helps you track their growth, right alongside your own goals. A simple, quarterly check-in to help you pause, reflect, and pray over how your kids are doing. The most requested unfinished task flowchart, is now built right into the planner. How to use the planner in every phase, from surviving to thriving. And the cover color you voted for in 2026 (it's a beautiful one!). Every update this year was made to help you plan with purpose, not pressure, and build a life that feels peaceful,…
I didn't want to get out of bed this week. Here's what happened. [Episode 383]
ListenedI don't know if you've ever had a week like this, but I really didn't want to get out of bed this week. Between waking up multiple times a night with a two-month-old, homeschooling five kids, and doing most bedtimes solo, I'm just tired. My husband works long days and is gone many evenings, and right now, this season is stretching me more than ever before. My capacity is growing, but so is the fatigue. And honestly? This week, I didn't want to do it. But even in those hard weeks, I've learned there is a deeper reason I keep showing up. It comes back to the vision I've created for my life. The one that reminds me who I want to be and what really matters, even when I don't feel like it. In this episode, I'll share: What to do when motivation runs out How to keep showing up when life feels heavy The surprising shift that helped me find peace in our home What God taught me about strength in stretching seasons It's not about pushing harder or pretending everything's fine. It's about learning to walk with God…
How to Handle Negative Attitudes with your Children [Episode 282]
ListenedIn this week's episode, I'm answering a question from a member of our own Thriving in Motherhood community about how to handle negative attitudes with her child when it comes to certain things about homeschooling. I'm no stranger to negative attitudes in our home (from myself and the kids), but we are very intentional with addressing those attitudes. Here are seven questions we ask when one of our children has a negative attitude: Have they moved their body today? What is the reason for resistance? How can I give them more autonomy? Is the environment set up so it is easy to do the thing they need to do? Am I ready with my part, or are they waiting for me and getting interrupted from what they started to do? What skill am I trying to teach? How can I partner with my child in this and mentor? What principles or truths do they need to understand to want to change the behavior themself? These questions help me get to the root of the problem and are part of seeking to understand so we can come up with win-win…
How To Actually Do a Morning Routine with Babies and Toddlers That Wake Up Early [Episode 281]
ListenedA few weeks ago, I did an episode about my morning routine. I got a great follow-up question about how to do this when you have a baby or toddler that wakes up super early. I remember that season well. A friend and I would meet up at 7:45 a.m. with our two toddlers and baby, each of whom woke up too early and went for a run and talked about how our kids wake up too early! But I've learned a lot from that season, and here are my best tips for doing a morning routine in the early years to get the brainstorming started for what could work for you. This is such an essential piece of the puzzle when it comes to not just surviving motherhood and fits into the Soul Pillar of the Three Pillars of Thriving. Here are a few things I've done that work for our family: Do your morning routine with your kids - I started doing my morning routine with my kids instead of jumping into kid things. I still do this with my youngest, who wakes up before the rest of my kids. The expectation is that I'm not available right now so…
How I prepped my family to be gone for a week by myself [Episode 280]
ListenedFor the first time in 10 years, I recently traveled across the country and left all my kids and my husband for six days. It wasn't as impossible as I had made it out to be in my mind. In fact, everything went great! In this week's episode, I'm sharing practical things I did to prepare everyone for a smooth week at home. Next time my husband travels, I'll be using some of these tips to make things easier for myself too.
How to Do a Summer Review to Effectively Transition into Fall With Clarity and Peace [Episode 279]
ListenedAs we transition from summer to fall, I like to pause and reflect on how the last few months went as a way to close the tabs and move forward with confidence into the next season. It can be easy to get to the end of the season and wish it went differently. But instead of sitting in a place of discouragement or looking at the things that didn't go well, we can pause and look for the lessons learned to help us be intentional about the little changes we make in our lives that make a big difference over time. You either get the results you want or the lesson you needed. So, if you want to try to do your own summer review, here are a few questions to get you started: What were you hoping summer would look like? What went well this summer? Was there something this summer that you stressed about that turned out not to be a big deal? What were some of the things that didn't go well? Look for the lessons and how to reframe. What do you want to remember in your planning for next summer? In this week's episode, I'll…
Transitioning Back Into Family Routines After Summer [Episode 278]
ListenedAfter a summer of different activities and routines (or maybe no routines), I get excited about settling into a new rhythm as we transition into the school year and fall. In this week's episode, I'm sharing the process I've used for years to help our family get clarity about what matters to us right now and how to make sure we make time for it in our daily life. I'm really great at thinking of the ideal in every area of life. But the reality is that things are going to change, balls are going to drop, and we let go of things as our enthusiasm and energy fade. So what matters most that you want to make a top priority and invest time and energy in? What is the thing that you can go big on this fall? This can be your vision for the fall to help you know what to say yes to, say no to and to structure your days and weeks around. Here are some other tips to transition back into family routines: Write down your schedule as it already is - not as you want it to be. Decide the one thing you want to go big on for the…
My Morning Routine [Episode 277]
ListenedFor years I've gotten up before the kids (or with the kids and let them play near me) while I do my morning routine to get myself in a good place. This is one of the ways I keep my Soul Pillar intact. When I don't do my morning routine, I find that it doesn't take too long before I'm irritable, grumpy, and snappy at everyone around me. Now that I'm aware of that, this morning routine is one of the first things I put back in place when we are transitioning from the novelty and trips of summer back into our school year routines at home. In this week's episode, I'm sharing exactly what I've done for my morning routine that sets me up for success. My Morning Routine: Free write about the last 24 hours: I write about anything that was meaningful and significant in the last 24 hours. This creates space in my brain. Answer questions in the Thriving in Motherhood Journal: I ask myself key questions in the Thriving in Motherhood Journal - What's one thing that could make me feel successful at the end of the day?…
Living a Minimalist and Faith-Filled Life With Dawn Madsen from Minimal Mom [Episode 276]
ListenedI'm so excited to finally be sharing the conversation I had with Dawn Madsen of Dawn the Minimal Mom. By now, I'm sure you've heard of the concept of minimalism, but in this week's episode, we are talking about how Dawn's faith has impacted her journey to having less things to manage. We also talk about the legacy her parents left her that had nothing to do with managing stuff. For me, the biggest takeaway is hope that whatever our weaknesses and strengths are as moms, they can have a lasting impact on our children for the better. Dawn often gets asked, "What's the threshold?" when it comes to how much stuff to keep around. Her metric is that everyone should be able to manage their things - and for a two-year-old, that's not going to be very much! If you're just getting started and need a refresher, Dawn recommends starting in the kitchen and keeping just what you are currently using in this season of life. This will have the biggest impact on your days because it's where families spend a lot of time every…
Our Family Zone System To Keep Our Home Tidy [Episode 275]
ListenedI've gotten lots of questions about our Zone system that we use to have the kids help clean up our main living spaces. In this week's episode, I'm sharing all of the details of what it is, why we've set things up this way, what everyone is responsible for, how often we reset each zone, and how long it takes. Zone cleaning is a long-term game plan. It takes time, and it will require a bit of extra effort on your part to set things up. We've divided our downstairs into four zones. Each kid had their own room with a large rug to vacuum. At first, you are going to do every step of the cleaning with your kids. It takes time - even years - for the kids to get the hang of it. We also paid close attention to when someone is feeling overwhelmed by a space and simplify it so they are set up for success. The things they are responsible for match their age. The wonderful thing about this is that we are now able to reset our entire downstairs fairly quickly as we've continued to increase our kid's skills, decrease the…
My Favorite Books To Get Excited About Homeschooling in the Elementary Years [Episode 274]
ListenedAs we are nearing the end of the summer and getting ready for the new school year, I wanted to share some of my all-time favorite books that inspire me in my homeschooling. 10 Books To Get You Excited About Homeschooling: Educating the Wholehearted Child Life Giving Home Home Education For the Children's Sake The Well-Trained Mind Call of the Wild and Free You Are Your Child's First Teacher Awaking Wonder The Brave Learner Teaching From Rest As I read these books, I'm searching for little bits and pieces that I can add to my vision of what our family and culture look like. This includes homeschooling, but it also goes deeper and more far-reaching than that. Homeschooling is about home. And that is a personal quest I'm on - figuring out what home looks and feels like. I've had a very transient life, so home isn't a place that I return to from my childhood. I'm still trying to figure out how to make a place feel like home, but I'm grateful for the little bits I've gleaned and incorporated into our family so…
The Ultimate Guide To Family Road Trips [Episode 273]
ListenedWe have been road tripping since we had just one little baby, and now we are on our third year of driving across the county and back as a family of six. In this week's episode, I'm sharing everything I've learned to make our drive smoother to help set you up for success on your next adventure. We are covering everything from our favorite gear, how we pack and organize, car activities for kids, favorite audiobooks, what we prepare for meals and snacks, how we find hotels every night, our procedure for smooth rest stops, and what a typical day on the road looks like.
Why Your Kids Need to See You Win with Gabe Cox [Episode 272]
ListenedDo you have dreams and goals that you want to go after but haven't made much progress yet? This week's conversation with Gabe Cox (@gabecox_redhotmindset) will hopefully inspire you to start taking baby steps forward on your unique journey as we discuss the power of letting your kids see you win. When Gabe Cox was a young mom, she had a mentor share with her that her kids had asked her, "What do you do, mom?" She had nothing to tell them except what she did for her children. Her entire life was about them. Investing in and being intentional with our children and families is so important, but for Gabe, she also realized that she wanted her kids to see what going after a goal, trying, failing, and learning looked like. She wanted her kids to see what doing something hard looked like and give them permission to do the same. For her, that looks like running races, qualifying for the Boston Marathon, and writing a book. Fast forward many years, and her oldest son is working to compete in the Olympics as a…
Why You Might Be Holding Onto Stuff [Episode 271]
ListenedI've been decluttering my house for years, working through all the layers of things we have. A few weeks ago, I opened a bin of extra bags, backpacks, and soft luggage and figured I could let these things go since it's been a while since I've used them. But then I remembered all the times we DID use them, how useful they were, and all the times in the future that they could come in handy. I put the lid back on the box and decided to deal with it later. As I was mulling over the content of the box a few days later, I had an epiphany about the real reason I wasn't ready to let these things go. We hold onto extra stuff when we don't have a system for how we will do things. Because I don't have a clear system for all the aspects of how we travel as a family, I hold onto more bags and travel items, "just in case" or "grab and go," without giving it lots of thought. Is this okay? Yep! But it's also a challenge for me that I'm excited to keep plugging away at. Developing more systems not only for traveling but for…
How We Can Cultivate a Growth Mindset in Motherhood with Kate House [Episode 270]
ListenedHave you ever heard of a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset? It's often come up in conversations I've had about parenting and helping our kids understand that "if at first, you don't succeed, try, try again." In this week's episode with Kate House of the Live By Design Podcast, she shares how this principle applies to our mindsets in motherhood. Two Fixed Mindsets That You Might Experience As A Mom I'm not worthy I'm not a priority Discovering the root of lack of worthiness comes by asking yourself "why" enough times until you discover the underlying thought for yourself personally. But once you discover the reason, you can replace it with an intentional thought like, "I'm worthy enough to feel joy." It's also common in our culture for moms to share the idea that "I'm not a priority because I'm so busy taking care of everyone else." But the reality is YOU are the only one that can actually take care of you, and if this is something you find yourself saying, you can change one baby step at a time. If you are…
The Power of a Risk List [Episode 269]
ListenedDo you have a hard time creating a vision of what you want for your motherhood to look like? Or do you feel united in goals with your spouse? A few weeks ago, Andrew and I brainstormed a list of things we could take a risk on. We defined risk as anything that puts us out of our comfort zone - which conveniently puts us in our learning zone as well. It was a fascinating experience and uncovered a lot of things for us. What you might uncover when you write a risk list: Things that are stressing you out that you are avoiding or procrastinating on Things that you feel like you should be doing but are not Things you want to do but haven't taken action on Personal goals or dreams family goals or dreams My husband and I were really informal in our risk list discussion. We just started each sentence by saying, "We could take a risk and…". At first, we shared things that were top of mind and stressing us out. We progressed on to things we want to try with our family, personal goals we have, habits we want to develop,…
5 Steps to Prepare For Survival Mode [Episode 268]
ListenedOur family recently had a week of me being out of commission for some medical things that we knew were coming. Andrew and I have been in this situation for good chunks or our marriage, so it felt like a familiar glove we slipped on for a few days. In this survival season, we departed from some of our usual standards of ideals - we watched movies every day, ate food that we don't normally eat, and let go of a lot of the routines or things the kids are supposed to do in the morning. But you know what didn't change? My mental health. I was in good spirits. I was the person I wanted to be with my husband and children. In the past, I sacrificed that all in the name of ideals. But when we can determine what our priorities are in a difficult season, we can embrace the difference and novelty of it all and focus on what matters most. Here are five things I did to prepare for survival mode: Plan for freezer meals. We like to get family-sized Stouffers or Voila to make things easy, but you could also prepare your own.…
Our Family Priorities This Summer [Episode 267]
ListenedOver the last few weeks, I've shared principles about creating a summer that is positive for the whole family and how to teach kids about habits. This week, I'm sharing what our priorities are for the summer. Here are our priorities for this summer: Improve writing with a daily journal habit Review math with Research Parent's Minimalist Math curriculum Practice instruments every day and have a family concert every two weeks Go to the library and read lots of books Keep our home tidy with our daily zone cleaning Wok on family house projects Give kids lots of time to play outside and work on their own interests When we clarify and narrow down our priorities, it becomes easier to allocate our time and energy effectively. This clear sense of focus also allows us to say no to activities that don't align with our chosen priorities. Tell me in the comments, what are your priorities for the summer?
How I Teach My Kids About Habits [Episode 266]
ListenedRecently, we talked about ten principles for creating a productive summer. Spoiler alert - a central part of a good summer rests on GOOD HABITS! So this week, I'm sharing how I teach my kids about habits. We have these conversations in five-minute increments after we read scriptures at breakfast over the course of the week. It's meant to be fun and silly while still teaching them important principles that we apply to their lives. These concepts have changed my life as an adult, and if my kids can understand how their brains work and learn to work with them to create habits, then they are set up for success. Here are five things I teach my kids about habits: There are a lot of things we need to do to take care of our bodies, minds, hearts, and spaces. It's each of our responsibilities to take care of these things for ourselves. Our brains are amazing! We can learn to do things automatically so we don't think so much about it. That's called a habit. To make habits easy to do, you need to set things up to make…
Easy Car Organization On A Budget [Episode 265]
ListenedOne of our priorities since having kids has NOT been the car. My strategy has been to ignore it for six months and then pull out the shopvac and excavate. With our 70 hour road trip approaching this summer, I've been watching a bunch of sprinter van conversion videos (turning a van into a motor home), dreaming about the life of ease we would lead with a kitchen and beds in a vehicle as we drove across America. On one build for a family of five, the mom mentioned that they gave a lot of attention to storage because what doesn't have a home ends up on the floor. This was a major lightbulb moment for me!Of course our car is a mess - there are literally zero places for things to go in there. So I went on a quest, and in just a few days we transformed our van from messy to clean and organized with things I found on Amazon and the dollar store. 8 Simple Things For Car Organization on a Budget Car Garbage Can Headrest Hook Expandable Cup Holders Mini Vacuum Cleaning Putty Baskets Dromedary Cookie Sheet First, we…
10 Essential Principles for Creating a Fun and Productive Summer Schedule with Kids! [Episode 264]
ListenedI recently got an email asking about how to create summer rhythms with kids - especially for moms that don't homeschool their kids, so their kids aren't used to having rhythms I brought this up in our Soaring Mothers Society meeting that we just had because all of these women have gone through the Made to Soar Program and understand the 3 Pillars of Thriving, are very intentional, and have all sorts of different situations with working out of the home, in the home, homeschool, and have their kids in public school. After a good discussion and sharing of ideas, plus taking my own experience of homeschooling our four kids and having kids at home with me for nearly 10 years now, I picked 10 principles for creating a fun and productive summer schedule with kids that you can use to figure out a rhythm that works for you and your family. If you've been wondering how you are going to have time to do the things that are important to you this summer with all of the kids at home, I'd love to invite you to a FREE…
Scripture Memory Box [Episode 263]
ListenedGet our family scripture songs: https://cart.thrivinginmotherhoodpodcast.com/bible-scripture-songs/ As a mom, I knew if I could only get one thing into my children's minds and hearts, it would be scripture. When my oldest was two years old, I decided we would start making up songs to add to our favorite verses because the scriptures I still had memorized from childhood were put to tunes. But, after a few years, we had created a lot of songs and didn't have any sense or organization to review them. That is when I came across Simply Charlotte Mason's scripture memory box idea. It only takes a few minutes each morning at breakfast for us to review our four songs, and by the end of the month, we've sung every song that we've memorized so far. Some days, all of us are singing in unison with gusto and other times, I'm still plugging along myself when I can't get all of my kids to focus at the same time. But either way, this is part of our daily rhythms that everyone has come to expect and look forward to. I love…
