Do Degrees Still Matter And What Do They Actually Prove?
ListenedIn this thought-provoking episode, hosted by Dr. Steve Mackay, Principal of the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT), is joined by an expert panel to explore one of the engineering profession's most debated questions: Do degrees matter, and what do they actually prove? Joining the discussion are Jillian Formentin, Head of Engineering at Wood and EIT Board Member; Brent Burgess, Digital Engineering Lead at WSP; and Kieran Rutter, Chartered Electrical Engineer and Network Manager at Perth Airport, who share their perspectives on the value of formal qualifications, practical experience, professional reputation, and lifelong learning. Together, the panel examines how engineering degrees provide the foundation for a successful career, why real-world performance ultimately defines professional growth, and how qualifications can open doors to chartership, accreditation, and future opportunities. They also discuss alternative career pathways, including the transition from trades to engineering, and why there is…
Securing Africa’s Water, Future Challenges and Solutions
ListenedVarious countries across the African continent share 63 transboundary rivers and lake basins, a situation that often generates tension between political interests and technical realities. Ensuring a sustainable future for Africa’s water resources therefore requires coordinated strategies that reconcile these competing dimensions. In this podcast episode, two experts on water resources offered valuable insights on the continent’s water sustainability challenges. Dr. Anthony Richard Turton, a scientist and specialist in water as a national security risk, served as a fellow in the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Richard Data, on the other hand, is a Ugandan water and sanitation specialist and a Doctor of Engineering student at EIT. Together, they examined the sovereignty and political complexities surrounding shared water resources while proposing scientific and technical approaches to support a more sustainable future.
